National Communication Workshop on Sustainability of Fish Wealth IUU and Ghost Fishing Gears (GFGs) 22-23 November 2025 (Somalia)
PERSGA held the workshop in coordination with the national focal point (Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) for two days (22-23 November 2025) in Mogadishu (Somalia). The three core objectives of this workshop were: 1. to raise the awareness level on the effects of illegal fishing and ghost fishing gears (GFGs); 2. to understand the activities and roles of pertinent governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to combat the illegal fishing, including sea turtle poaching, and GFGs and; 3. to share information and knowledge between the governmental sectors and non-governmental sectors on the situatable management of fisheries in Somal. Different presentations, in relation to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU), importance of stock assessment and GFGs were provided certain governmental sectors and NGOs. There was exhibition showing the PERSGA awareness poster materials in relation to these issues at the workshop. During and at the end of the workshop there was an open dialogue session to discuss issues on fishery management and to propose more applied effective approaches to combat the illegal fishing and GFGs in Somalia. More than 30 persons- affiliated to governmental, NGOs, academic institutions and private sectors- participated at this workshop.
