National Awareness-Raising Program on Sustainability of Fish Wealth IUU and Ghost Fishing Gears (GFGs) 21-24 September 2025 Egyptian Red Sea Coat (Egypt)
PERSGA held this program in coordination with the national focal point Egyptian Environmental Affairs (EEPA)) along & Red Sea Area Sector (RSPAS) in Egypt for four days (21-24 September 2025) at three coastal areas along the Red Sea Coast of Egypt. These areas were Abu Ghosson (Marsa Al Alam), Quiser and Hughradah. PERSGA had a meeting with fishers in each area. The main purpose of this event was to raise the awareness level of fishers on Sustainability of Fish Wealth and to have an open discussion with fishers for the development of fishery management along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The main activities of the program were meetings, though a visit to a local fish market was a part of these activities. Three one-day meetings were held in the coastal area ( 21-23 September 2025. About 45 persons (some of them were chairs of fishery societies) participated at these meetings that included different presentations in relation to Ghost Fishing Gears (GFGs), Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) and fisher Legislations & endangered species in the Red Sea coast of Egypt. There were also discussion sessions for the local fishers at each meeting. On the fourth day (24 September 2025), a visit to the Hurghada fish market was made to have dialogues with fishers regarding some of these issues. These activities were undertaken to meet the aim of the program.
